I feel like our little blog is floundering so… I decided to add a little more structure. I plan on posting based on categories in the future. My hope is that this will help me to post more useful information on a regular basis. These posts are generally going to be outside of the normal family notes. Just my ramblings.

Monday: Projects. I will post details on any of my little projects. You will likely find everything from home improvement ideas to kids crafts.

Wednesday: Geek speek. I will discuss software and technology.

Friday: Everything else. Cooking, opinions and anything else that doesn’t fit into a neat little category.

Family notes will be posted anytime that we have time.

I also am going to start making notes on my garden, sort of a daily journal. Due to the fact that I assume that this will bore everyone to tears, the posts will not appear on the front page of the blog. I will add a new menu item at the top that will access all of the garden notes.

Even doing my best to keep my little seedlings next to the lights, it just isn’t enough. They need sunlight and this is about the time of year I give it to them. I use the back bed of the garden as a holding area. I use simple pvc pipe stuck into the ground on both sides of the bed forming little hoops. Then I cover the hoops with a long sheet of plastic. This works just fine for hardening off the plants. Unfortunately, it also creates quite a bit of work. I try to keep the plants covered partially, part of the time in the beginning so that they don’t get sunburned. I will cover them completely most nights to keep them warm. Gradually I will stop doing both of these things and let them sit out all day and all night until planted.

Strawberries planted last fall are blooming now and the garlic is doing quite well. We planted 6 or 7 different varieties of hardneck garlic last fall. I expect a good crop due to the late frosts last year. Irises transplanted last year are starting to bloom and the top set onions are incredibly healthy.

All in all, the garden is shaping up. The beds still need prepped over the next couple of weeks and I still would like to get some piping for watering the garden as well as a small arbor over the north bed.

Well, the garden is as usual a little late in waking up from its winter slumber. We have several new things planned for this season.

1. We are hoping to add another board onto each raised bed. This isn’t as much to allow more soil as it is to prevent soil from being spilled into the paths.
2. We would like to add a more semi-permanent watering system for each of the beds. We will try to document what we do as we finalize our plans.
3. There will likely be a few new methods of caging plants and blossoms for saving seed.
4. We are lastly thinking of an arbor like structure in the long north bed. This is going to hopefully provide for growing space hogs up instead of across our beds.
