The Leprechaun Works web site, recently listed a few reasons why you might want to start using Google Chrome. We have an additional reason, your Kindle.

A Chrome extension called Send to Kindle, will strip text from any web page and send it to your Kindle. This works by sending the content to your Amazon Kindle email address. There are no fees associated with sending content via Wi-Fi. There are however per megabyte charges if you send documents using your 3G service. You can find your Amazon Kindle’s email address on Amazon’s your account > manage your Kindle.

Simply type this address into the settings in the extensions options. Clicking the checkmark button, will convert the page removing all images for easy reading. It then gives you a preview with a send button. Click the send button and you are done. Make sure that your Kindle is on and your Wi-Fi is enabled to receive your documents.

You can find the Send to Kindle extension in the Google Chrome Web Store, here.

I’m a stay at home dad which involves shuttling kids back and forth. Traveling in and out of the house constantly. Cooking items like pumpkin that take longer than say 30 minutes doesn’t fit into my schedule very well.

A week or so ago, I noticed that there were still a large number of pumpkins on our front steps. Left over cast offs from decorating for Halloween. As usual I couldn’t bare to throw them away, so I started to formulate a plan. I didn’t have any immediate needs for pumpkin, which left me with cooking it, and freezing it so I could use it at a later date. The problem was that I really didn’t want the oven on when I wasn’t in the house. I needed another way to cook the pumpkin.

The solution: A crockpot. This method does involve prepping the pumpkin by cleaning the pumpkin first, but I could then cook it without worrying about leaving for an hour or so.

Cut the top of the pumpkin off and remove all seeds.

Cut the pumpkin into wedges. Just continue halving each piece until it is manageable.

Peel the wedges.

Cube the pieces into approximately 2 inch chunks.

Cook the chunks in the crockpot on low for approximately 3 hours. The smaller the pieces, the less time it will take. Just test the pumpkin by poking with a fork.

Remove pumpkin from crockpot and mash with a potato masher.

Let cool and freeze.

I bought a bag of cherries from the store the other day. I thought it would be a good snack for the kids during a little picnic. I went to the drawer for a combination tool that minces garlic and pits cherries. I can state firmly that this tool is horrible. The pitting portion of the tool is in between the handles making it very awkward to use. It also only managed to hit the pit about 25% of the time.

So, I proceeded to rummage through our kitchen drawers for a chopstick. I had seen tv shows where the chef had used a chopstick to remove the pits. I had tried this method in the past and it too left a lot to be desired. However, during my search I found a tool that worked very well.

What I found was the sleeve from an instant read thermometer. The thermometer itself has been missing in action now for a few weeks, but the sleeve itself remained. I simply took the end centered it over the stem end (after removing the stem) and pushed. The sleeve itself slid through the cherries quite easily. I also pushed 100% of the cherry pits from the 30 or so that I was preparing for the picnic. It seems that the hollow tool served to capture the pit in the recess preventing the pit from sliding to one side.

Pitting cherries is still time consuming but my hollow tube worked much better than the tool purchased and was easy to use.

OK. You think this is obvious right?

Actually, my mother showed me how to peel a banana just last year. Apparently Mark Summer told her how to peel a banana. So… what is the secret?

Peel it from the bottom instead of the stem end. Mark was kidding around with my mom as she struggled with a banana that wasn’t completely ripe. He told her to peel it like the monkeys.

It is actually a revelation if you haven’t tried it. My kids eat a ridiculous amount of bananas and most of the time, the bananas aren’t quite ripe. Peeling them from the bottom is very easy even when they are green. You also have a cool little handle when they are peeled this way.
