East High School is currently being remodeled and so we are temporarily being housed at the North Education Center, currently called “East on Arcadia”. The school population has a 54% attendance rate, is 96% African American and 86% of the students are economically disadvantaged. This is my 13th year teaching high school English but my first year working for Columbus City Schools. My main goal is to get the students to attend class and so I want to do all I can to engage them when they are present. I have spent my own money on classroom journals, pencils, markers, paper and new books and I am running out of funds. The latest item on my wish list is a class set(26 copies) of Long Way Gone: Memoirs of a Boy Soldier. I would also like to be able to pay the $150 fee to have my students participate in the Books of Hope project, where students write and illustrate books for other children in India or Uganda. Thank you!
